December Training update

It’s been an interesting year for our training centres. Like many of you, they have adjusted accordingly to the challenge presented by COVID-19. Whilst centres’ are having to run courses with reduced numbers they are presented with challenges in meeting demand for training.

The five yearly cycle for refresher training is upon us and heightened interest for initial installer training meaning they are working exceptionally hard.

A range of measures have been put in place, with some centres investing in refurbished and increased training spaces. Some of the measures you will typically find at a training centre include:

  • Reduced numbers attending courses
  • Social distancing measures
  • Regular cleaning routines
  • Hand gels and washing facilities throughout
  • Taking your own lunches

HETAS Training & Technical Support Manager Mike Harvey comments:

“HETAS training centres have continued to be busy throughout the year despite COVID-19, ensuring robust measures are in place. Individually, centres have thoroughly risk assessed and altered existing provision to meet social distancing and hygiene requirements to ensure the safety of visitors.

2021 will see an exciting addition to the HETAS training offer in the shape of a new online learning platform dedicated to HETAS registrants, offering the opportunity for blended learning and assessment whilst maintaining  focus on the requirement to demonstrate practical ability. More on this to come in the New Year!”

We also spoke to our centres about the challenges they face and how they have responded to maintain the availability of training. Here’s what some of our centres have been up to during lockdown.

Thermal Earth

Thermal Earth has faced a number of lockdowns in Wales, but interest in training remains high in Wales. We spoke to the team to see what has been going on at their centre.

“The Thermal Earth Training Academy has recently undergone a full refurbishment to increase the size of the facility and create a safe 2m distance between course attendees. Each course is limited to just 6 spaces so that trainees can benefit from a more personable learning experience, held in a safe environment supported by temperature checks and robust cleaning procedures. Trainees also have access to separate facilities for refreshment breaks, away from on-site employees to reduce contact with others”

Robinsons UK

Robinsons UK provides training at several centres across the UK. We spoke to Andrea Robinson.

“We’d like to say a massive thank you to everyone who has been through our Centre’s over the last 6 months, and those booked on future courses, for your continuing patience during these strangest of times.  We continue to manage  and adhere to all guidelines and maintain social distancing in the Training Room and Practical Training areas.  It’s great to see everyone using the additional hand wash facilities, sanitising and cleaning stations to keep us all safe.  We also ensure that everyone makes best efforts to continue to follow social distancing while moving around the Centres and have in place additional signage.  All of the additional measures have proved a great success and we will continue to operate in this manner until guidance changes or is updated.”

In their second year as a HETAS accredited training centre the team at Gastec based in Milton Keynes have established themselves as a popular choice for installers wishing to refresh their competencies or undertake initial installer training, here’s what they had to say;

“It’s important that we all work together through this unprecedented time and fight the COVID 19 spread. We at Gastec Training will remain open and will be conducting business as usual until we are told otherwise”.

Windhager UK has been successful in their application for a grant to offer subsidised training courses (H005DE) in support of the Governments ‘Green Homes Grant’ scheme to heating engineers. Click here to find out more about biomass training opportunities with Windhager.

Stove Industry Supplies

Our newest centre, Stove Industry Supplies has risen to the challenge of launching a new centre during COVID and now offers a range of courses from their Blackpool base. Father and son Nigel and Sam Hamer have worked hard to put COVID-19 Secure measures into the training. Back in February we welcomed SiS as a training centre. Read more here.
