Technical Bulletin #33

Welcome to the spring 2024 edition of the HETAS Technical Bulletin. For edition thirty-three, we will be providing guidance regarding some of the topics the technical helpline have recently encountered. Direct and indirect ventilation to an appliance, including correct ventilation measurement techniques, and the correct way to calculate the appropriate cross-sectional area for square, circular, and rectangular flue systems are the key technical topics of this edition. Additionally, we provide our advice on recent events pertaining the industry, clarifying our stance on the clearance distance from an appliance to a wooden beam in a fireplace recess and explaining Scotland’s recent legislation – the New Build Heat Standard.

This edition also welcomes Cain who joined the HETAS technical team recently. Cain has been a valuable member of the team since he joined in November.

This edition’s articles include:

  • Clearance distance from an appliance to a wooden beam in a fireplace recess
  • Ducted and indirect ventilation to an appliance
