Training Update for January 2021

Training is one of the many important parts of ensuring competence of our registrants and through our competent person scheme authorisation there is a requirement for 5 yearly training reassessment. For installers who are continuing to work through the current lockdown this does mean that you will need to demonstrate your ongoing compliance with scheme rules.

We are aware that a number of training centres are currently closed and some are providing a reduced service. For installers with an immediate requirement to refresh training we want to make this as achievable as possible.

Training Centres

We understand how much you all value the time spent on tools, but equally the importance of attending a training centre to refresh your training. No online resource can replicate the value of discussing issues with a trainer and your peers on a course. There is simply no way online learning can replicate the practical assessment provided at training centres either.

We do have a number of training centres across the UK offering training courses. Each has put in place COVID-19 Secure measures, including reduced numbers to keep you safe and socially distanced.

Kiwa Video

Kiwa is one of the centres still providing training, you can view the measures in place in their recent video.

Over the coming months we will keep you updated on the availability of training across the UK as the centres currently closed during lockdown open up their doors.

Current centres that are open and providing training include:

The centres which are not currently running and still available to discuss your future training requirements. Our full list of training centres can be found at

We are in ongoing contact with each of the training centres and we hope that as lockdown measures ease over the coming months, you can return to centres to complete your training and assessment.

Funded Biomass Training

Last month we also informed you of funded biomass training taking place at Windhager. It is hoped this training can take place in February, contact Windhager to find out more.

Online Learning

The challenges presented by lockdown does mean that it has been difficult for some to attend a training centre, and for a small number of installers with an immediate requirement to refresh training we have set up an interim online learning website to help achieve ongoing compliance. There will still be a requirement for these candidates to attend a training centre within 6 months.

Candidates who have an immediate requirement to refresh will have been contacted initially by email with our team following up with calls. It is of vital importance to ensure your ongoing registration with HETAS that you get booked onto a course as soon as possible, be it at a training centre, or completing online learning followed by a practical assessment at a HETAS training centre.

The online H003 refresher assessment takes up to 90 minutes to complete; the H006 refresher assessment takes up to 30 minutes, both are a close replica of the paper-based assessment usually undertaken at a HETAS training centre. They are easy to use with great instructions and tips on how to complete.Once you’ve successfully completed, we ask that you undertake part 2 of the refresher, the Practical at a HETAS training centre of your choice within six months. We recognise that you may already have plans in place to complete training and request that, unless you’ve already spoken to one of the team, you call 01684 278170 (option 1 then option 1).

Early feedback on the online learning has been positive and ensures you are ready for the practical assessment which takes place at one of our centres. Of course, those who prefer to undertake the full refresher at a training centre can continue to do so, provided your training has not expired.
