The HETAS Book a Sweep campaign, which ran from January to March 2025, has proven to be a significant success in promoting chimney safety across the UK. Designed to encourage timely chimney sweeping during the high-risk winter period, the campaign, in its third year, drove a substantial increase in web traffic to the HETAS website, with the  HETAS Approved Chimney Sweeps and Service Technicians search being one of the top-ranking pages on the website.

One of the highlights of the 2025 campaign was the widespread support it received from across the industry, as well as from Fire and Rescue Services and Local Authorities. This collaborative approach played a crucial role in extending the campaign’s reach and reinforcing the importance of regular chimney maintenance. Working together, the campaign helped amplify the message that proactive action can help prevent fires and keep homes safe.

The campaign’s core aim, reducing chimney fires, was especially timely; around 40% of chimney fires happen between January and March. By making it easier for homeowners to find trusted, approved chimney sweeps and service technicians and highlighting the importance of sweeping before problems occur, Book a Sweep has had a tangible impact on public awareness and behaviour.

Over the past two decades, the UK has experienced a continued decline in chimney fires, reflecting the success of ongoing fire safety initiatives and increased public awareness.

According to the UK Government’s fire statistics, the number of chimney fires has steadily decreased since the early 2000s. This downward trend can be attributed to several factors, including improved building regulations, the widespread adoption of smoke alarms, and proactive public safety campaigns. Chimney fires now account for only about 1.5% of all fire incidents in England.

One significant contributor to this decline is the emphasis on regular chimney maintenance, choosing the right fuels and correct use of appliances. Campaigns like HETAS’s Book a Sweep have played a crucial role in educating homeowners about the importance of annual chimney sweeping, along with associated messages around fuel choice and correct and effective use of appliances. We thank our registrants for their ongoing support in sharing these important messages. The strong engagement with the campaign reflects a growing understanding of the importance of fire safety and the value of using approved professionals, such as HETAS registrants. It marks a meaningful step forward in HETAS’ ongoing commitment to supporting safe, efficient and environmentally responsible heating practices.

HETAS works hard to deliver ongoing value to you by providing access to a wide range of resources year-round, including scheme certification marks and campaign assets (Book a Sweep, Get Fired Up and Chimney Fire Safety Week); all available in the Technical Hub and the HETAS website.
