Alan Young, Head of Quality & Assurance at HETAS, has been appointed to the Board of Trustees at CO Research Trust (CORT), joining a number of other experts in the field of carbon monoxide (CO) safety.

Joining HETAS in 2012 as a Technical Officer, Alan has gained valuable experience and expertise across quality and compliance in the solid fuel industry where his appointment to Compliance Manager in 2022 – and more recently Head of Quality & Assurance in 2025 – has required him to maintain and oversee quality management systems across HETAS.

In addition to his work overseeing the Compliance Team at HETAS, including the effective resolution of any complaints against non-compliant installations, Alan’s work has led him to become a trusted expert into investigations into domestic CO and fire incidents. In supporting relevant bodies and public sector services with their investigations, Alan has become an industry expert and a trusted name, enabling the effective influence of future strategy and government policy – focusing safety and environmental objectives.

CO Research Trust

CORT is a registered charity, established in 2005, with the objective of reducing the incidents of death and injury from CO exposure. Their work involves key research into CO injury and exposure, where awareness, campaigning, and educational activities help to continue reducing the number of CO incidents.

The Trust envisage a world where CO incidents and exposure does not occur, and their work ensures where it does occur it is easily detected, diagnosed, and treated.

Through granting funding, advice, and support to both organisations and individuals in research and evidence-gathering relating to CO safety, and they have been responsible for bringing together the UK’s leading experts on CO – furthering scientific and clinical knowledge.

Recent appointment

Alan’s appointment to the Board of Trustees at CORT continues his active engagement with CO awareness and incident prevention. He is also a representative of HETAS where he provides valuable insights to government bodies at the All-Party Parliamentary Carbon Monoxide Group (APPCOG). APPCOG is the leading forum for parliamentarians to discover, discuss, and promote ways of reducing CO incidents in the UK, formed of experts from a variety of relevant sectors and industries.

Alan’s involvement with APPCOG aligns with his recent appointment to the Board of Trustees at CORT, enabling him to encourage the safe, efficient, and environmentally responsible use of solid fuels – including the continued compliant installation practices.

HETAS looks forward to this continued partnership as we work alongside CORT to reduce CO incidents.
