Chimney Fire Safety Week is back for 2025! The annual campaign takes place 1–7 September this year. What will you be doing to support the campaign?

From raising awareness and engaging with us on social to teaching homeowners the best ways to use their appliance, there’s so much you can do to help us continue reducing chimney fire incidents.

HETAS and the team from Fire Kills are pleased to be supporting the campaign, working with industry and Fire and Rescue Services to promote this positive safety message to consumers. We want to continue growing this campaign and raising awareness of the key safety messages – how will you be supporting the campaign this year and what safety tips will you be using?

Official national fire and rescue statistics show that chimney fires have been steadily decreasing in most regions over the years, despite recent wood burner popularity. This is a testament to the success of this campaign, the important work of HETAS registrants, and increasing homeowner awareness.

In England across 2024-25, chimney fire incidents reduced by 5.03% in comparison to 2023-24. Chimney fires in England made up approximately 1.4% of the total fires for 2024-25.

Awareness and Action

Chimney Fire Safety Week aims to raise awareness of the dangers of chimney fires and the common causes, encouraging stove owners to take action. This action could be safe operation, appropriate fuel selection, and regular appliance and chimney maintenance.

The campaign focuses on the importance of using a registered professional for chimney sweeping and appliance maintenance, the use of high-quality fuels, and keeping your home warm through responsible burning habits.

Chimney fires have been steadily decreasing in most regions over the years, despite recent popularity surges in wood and smokeless fuels for home heating. The total number of chimney fires which occurred in England during 2024-25 is 2,019 (approximately 1.4% of total fires), with incidents peaking January – March. Statistics show that 40% of chimney fires in England take place over these three months, coinciding with the period where people will be using their stoves the most to keep their homes warm.

Once again, HETAS is providing a number of graphics relating to the campaign which you can display on your website or social media channels to show your support. Keep an eye on the HETAS and Woodsure social media channels where we will be sharing safety and awareness content all week.
