Alan Young

Head of Quality & Assurance

Alan joined HETAS in 2012 as a Technical Officer, before becoming Compliance Manager in 2022. In 2024 he was appointed Quality Assurance Manager, a role in which he is responsible for maintaining quality management systems and processes across the business. Alan is now Head of Quality & Assurance. Prior to joining HETAS, Alan worked as a plumbing and heating engineer, giving him valuable real-world experience and insights into the sector.

Alanʼs role involves ensuring compliance to Standards and Conditions for accredited schemes. For example, the Competent Person Scheme (CPS) – which allows employees to self-certify that their work complies with the Building Regulations in England and Wales – and the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS biomass) – which certifies that businesses who wish to commission renewable heating products, such as heat pumps, adhere to recognised industry standards.

Alan is responsible for managing the assessor resource for HETAS and Woodsure, overseeing the Compliance Team and dealing with the evaluation of registered businesses. Alan works alongside the registration team and across HETAS operations, to ensure increased customer satisfaction, including effective resolution of any complaints against non-compliant installers. In addition, Alan also supports relevant bodies and public sector services with investigations into domestic carbon monoxide and fire incidents.

To support Quality & Compliance, Alan has continued engagement with third-party organisations that directly influence future strategy and policy from a safety and environmental perspective, aligning with organisational objectives, being appointed a Trustee of the CO Research Trust (CORT) in 2025, a nationwide charity focused on reducing the incidents of death and serious injury from carbon monoxide poisoning. In addition, Alan regularly represented HETAS by providing insight to government bodies, including the All-Party Parliamentary Carbon Monoxide Group (APPCOG) – the leading forum for parliamentarians to discover, discuss and promote ways of tackling carbon monoxide poisoning in the UK.
