Calvin May
Head of Technical Services
Calvin joined HETAS at the beginning of 2010 and has since progressed to Head of Technical Services after a number of diverse roles, including in product certification, project management and standards management.
In his current position, he is responsible for leading the technical department in raising best practice standards for the installation and commissioning of solid fuel appliances and services, to support stakeholders and the wider industry. He also provides informative updates which may inform the responsibilities of HETAS registrants and recognised stakeholders.
Through his representation on a number of BSI solid fuel technical committees, including RHE/28, RHE/24, B/506 and PTI/17, Calvin maintains a proactive involvement in leading and developing British and European installation and product testing standards, ensuring these reflect today’s best-practice techniques for innovative products and solutions brought to market. Furthermore, he is an expert representative on current European residential standards committee working groups as part of TC/295 – this work is essential to ensure new standards across Europe align with government policy, strategy and initiatives.
Calvin brings a wealth of experience to his current position, utilising 15 years of experience to enable the industry to keep up with the ever-changing landscape, by providing comprehensive and eligible guidance. He is a strong advocate for maintaining continued safety and robust practices through quality schemes and projects, whilst at the same time raising awareness about the impacts of the environmentally responsible burning of solid fuels.
He has been a key author in the creation and development of a wide number of technical documentation, which is recognised and utilised by the industry in the absence of official guidance. This documentation includes expert guidance and technical notes on direct air supply, commissioning, leisure accommodation and insulation board materials. Calvin takes pride that these documents can be used to raise awareness of installer responsibilities and heighten safety practices of solid fuel appliance installations
