HETAS training courses can be used towards registration on the range of schemes available with HETAS,  including Competent Persons registration (CPS), Microgeneration Certification (MCS), Approved Retailer and Approved Chimney Sweeps.

H001 – Introduction to Solid Fuel

This course is targeted at the candidate with no prior knowledge of the heating and plumbing industry and is an ideal starting point for any candidate looking to gain experience within the field.

This course is targeted at show room staff, surveyors, building control officers and architects who need an update on all current building regulations and standards. This course is also a route for retailer outlets to gain the criteria to be listed on the HETAS approved retailer scheme.

This course is for candidates who have relevant experience within the heating/plumbing and construction industry. Successful completion of this course leads to certification that can be used for registration on the competent persons registration scheme for installation of dry appliances.

The HETAS Introduction to Solid Fuel Course is a foundation course for anyone interested in solid fuel, wood and biomass technology. The course is intended to inform the candidate on the concept of heating with solid fuel, wood and biomass. The course also provides a demonstration on the basic operating principles of solid fuel appliances. Candidates completing the course will receive an attendance certificate.

Pre-Requisites
No prior experience is needed.

Duration – 2 Days

The HETAS Solid Fuel Regulations & Standards Course is particularly suitable for showroom staff, building surveyors, building control officers and architects. The course focuses on regulations, standards, legislation, appliance sizing and pre-installation survey considerations. This course provides a route for retailers to gain the criteria necessary to join the HETAS Approved Retailer scheme.

Pre-Requisites

Any specifier based occupation including retailers, construction professionals, architects, building control officers, surveyors or shop keepers looking to gain experience for design.

Duration – 3 Days

This HETAS course is for candidates who have relevant experience within the construction industry, including allied trades such as plumbing and heating installers.  A training certificate is awarded upon successful completion of the course, enabling the candidate to apply for registration with HETAS on the competent persons registration scheme for the installation of dry appliances.

Pre-Requisites

At least one of the following:

  • Demonstrable, appropriate previous work experience on dry stove installations (Three installations signed off via LABC or under supervision from a HETAS Registered Installer)
  • OFTEC technician with scope of work categories 101,102 or 105e.
  • Registered Gas Safe operative with work categories CCN1 and HTR1.
  • Registered member of GOMCS, APICS or NACS.

Duration – 1 Day

The H004 is suitable for plumbing and heating installers who have already successfully completed the H003 course (time limited). The course is important for the safe and effective installation of solid fuel wet appliances. The course discusses advancements in technology, including integration with other types of wet heating. Successful completion of the H004 course allows HETAS registrants to extend their scope of registration with HETAS on the competent persons registration scheme.

Pre Requisites

  • Compulsory: HETAS H003 Dry Appliance Installer Course

and

  • evidence of Gas Safe Registration: CCN1 and CEN1;
  • or, evidence of OFTEC 101 or 102;
  • or, evidence of formal qualifications: City & Guilds 6129/6035 and 6089, or QCF 6189;
  • or, evidence of equivalent work experience on wet heating systems

This completely new Direct Entry biomass training course is available to existing gas and oil installers and others who wish to attain the skills necessary to install biomass boiler appliances. Candidates who successfully complete this course can register with HETAS for a limited scope registration for the installation of log, chip and pellet biomass boilers, pellet stoves and associated equipment.   The course can also be used as part of the criteria for approval with HETAS as a Microgeneration Certification Installer for biomass.

The biomass training course covers appliances up to 45kW intentionally but the biomass training may be appropriate for the installation of appliances up to 100kW, including log, pellet and chip appliances.

Prerequisites

Guidance on meeting the pre-requisite entry requirements for access to HETAS H005DE Biomass Course.

OPTION 1

Formal Qualification Entry Route

As per APPROVED CENTRE COURSE HANDBOOK FOR H005 and H005DE Biomass Courses v1.1.

  • N/SVQ Level 2/3 in Plumbing or equivalent earlier certification that provides evidence of competence; or
  • N/SVQ Level 2/3 in Heating and Ventilating (Domestic Installation) or equivalent earlier certification that provides evidence of competence; or
  • N/SVQ Level 2/3 in Heating and Ventilating (Industrial and Commercial Installation) or equivalent earlier certification that provides evidence of competence; or
  • N/SVQ Level 2/3 in Oil-Fired Technical Services or equivalent earlier certification that provides evidence of competence; or
  • N/SVQ Level 2/3 in Gas Installation and Maintenance or equivalent earlier certification that provides evidence of competence.

Including: Water Regulations/Water Byelaws (WRAS or equivalent)

 

OPTION 2

Experienced Worker Route

Experienced Worker Route
Option 2 is an alternative route for applicants who wish to enrol on the H005DE course without the Option 1 course prerequisites. Completion of the HETAS Experienced Worker Route Portfolio may provide a suitable option.
It is important that the portfolio is completed and approved by the training centre prior to attending a biomass course.
HETAS are not able to provide a course certificate if the portfolio has not been completed and approved.
Applicants are advised to contact their HETAS training centre for more information if this is a desirable route.
In all cases the following are considered:

  • Previous related work experience within the plumbing and heating industry.
  • Already a competent person within a scheme possessing a history of installation experience.
  • Successful completion of an OFTEC training course 101,102 or 105e.
  • A valid current gas safe registration with minimum categories of work: CCN1 and CEN1.
  • City & Guilds 6128, 6129 and 6132 technical certificates.

Please Note:

Stand-alone Vocationally Related Qualifications (VRQs), including City & Guilds 6128, 6129 and 6132 technical certificates are not acceptable on their own as an alternative to NVQ Level 2 or 3 but may be used to help support completion of the portfolio.

The HETAS H006 course provides training for the installation of an internal twin wall rigid system chimney in residential properties. The course discusses system components and installation technique in relation to the various elements of a domestic structure.

Duration – 1 or 2 days – Available from February 2013

HETAS Refresher Courses have been available since February 2013 throughout our Approved Training Centres in England and Wales. Installers will be required to attend refresher training every five years. This is a mandatory requirement for all Competent Person Schemes from June 2014. HETAS have primarily developed Refresher Courses for Dry and Wet Installer courses H003 and H004.

For internal system chimney installation candidates will need to complete an H006 System Chimney Course.

Dry Installer (H003) – formerly known as the Solid Fuel Awareness Course

Option 1 – One Day – preliminary test with theory and practical assessment

  • Training material posted two weeks prior to preliminary test by registered post to candidate
  • Candidate attends training centre and sits a preliminary test
  • Candidate successfully completes test and is then allowed to continue with full one day assessment and exam
  • If candidates are unsuccessful with the preliminary test then continue to Option 2.

Option 2 – Two Days – one day training and one day theory and practical assessment

  • Candidate attends first day refresher training
  • Candidate attends second day theory and practical assessment
  • If successful, candidate claims certification
  • If unsuccessful, candidate has the option to attend a full H003 course

Wet Installer Training (H004) – formerly known as the Engineers Course

  • Candidate attends a full one day training and assessment course
  • If successful, candidate claims certification

Course Content

The dry installer refresher training will include:

  • Changes to Building Regulations
  • Changes to Standards and Legislation
  • Health and Safety updates
  • Calculations concerning air and flue requirements
  • Commissioning and Handover
  • Theory and practical assessment

The wet installer refresher training will include:

  • Changes to Building Regulations regarding wet systems
  • Updates in technology and integration
  • Commissioning and Handover
  • Theory assessment

Pre-Requisites

H003 refresher training is available to any person who has previously completed a H003 course (or older equivalent).
