Led by Global Action Plan, Clean Air Day is the UK’s largest air pollution campaign which aims to improve public understanding of air pollution and explain easy actions everyone can take to tackle air pollution to protect the environment and our health. HETAS is a non-profit organisation committed to ever better practice in the use of biomass and other solid fuels, and is supporting Clean Air Day 2020 by raising awareness of the need to choose and use the right woodburner with the right fuel to help make the air cleaner and healthier for everyone.

Three steps to environmentally responsible burning in the home

Under the right conditions, burning wood can be a sustainable and renewable heating choice. These three simple steps can reduce carbon and particulate emissions in the home by up to 80%, compared to burning coal in an open fire.

Bruce Allen, Chief Executive of HETAS, says:

“This year’s Clean Air Day campaign is taking place at the same time as new air quality regulations are one step closer to becoming law, helping to ban the sale of wet wood and traditional house coal. However, everyone with a woodburner at home can make a difference right now by only burning properly seasoned or kiln dried wood fuel.

“For those who are thinking about having a woodburner installed, or are looking to replace an older appliance or open fire, it’s really important know what you’re buying and this is where manufacturers, retailers and installers can help enormously. The HETAS Ecodesign Compliant label also helps to easily identify appliances that are proven to meet the latest efficiency standards and have the biggest impact on improving air quality.

“However, it’s also critical that once the appliance is installed, the user knows how to use it safely and efficiently and ensures it’s properly maintained. HETAS.co.uk is the go-to place for homeowners to find professional accredited installers and chimney sweeps who will provide all the advice and guidance you need.”

Working in partnership

HETAS works with government bodies, industry partners, stove manufacturers, installers, sweeps and fuel producers and suppliers to inform consumers about choices of appliances and fuels that will benefit our homes and the environment.
