When should I get my chimney swept?
Once again this year, HETAS was proud to support Chimney Fire Safety week which took place from 4th-10th September.
Whilst there was a reduction in nationwide chimney fires, there were still over 5,000 avoidable chimney fires in England and Wales – April 2016 to March 2017.
Our team is often asked “When should I get my chimney swept?”
HETAS encourage having your chimney swept at least twice a year when burning wood or bituminous housed coal and at least once a year when burning smokeless fuels.
The best times to have your chimney swept are just before the start of the heating season and after your stove has not been used over a prolonged period. If sweeping twice a year, the second time should be after the peak of the main heating season.
Use a Professional
HETAS recommends that chimney sweeping is best carried out by a HETAS Approved Chimney Sweep. In order to maintain high standards of sweeping, HETAS is associated with these professional bodies: The Association of Professional Independent Chimney Sweeps (APICS), The Guild of Master Chimney Sweeps (GoMCS) and The National Association of Chimney Sweeps (NACS).

Out and About – Event Update
It’s just one week until The National Association of Chimney Sweeps exhibition which takes place next Friday. We also have a number of HETAS Live events coming up across the country, a great opportunity to meet the team and have your say.
The NACS Exhibition 2017 is just five weeks away and is taking place at The Crowne Plaza in Stratford-upon-Avon. The HETAS team will be there throughout the event and look forward to seeing you there.
The NACS Exhibition is being held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel (previously Holiday Inn), Bridgefoot, Stratford upon Avon, Warwickshire, CV37 6YR. The exhibition will take place over two days, Friday 7th & Saturday 8th April. Opening times will be 9.30am – 4.30pm on both days.

Chimney Sweeps Directory
At the end of October HETAS launched its new HETAS Approved Chimney Sweeps Directory and we have sent copies to our approved Sweeps and Retailers as well as Local Authorities, Fire & Rescue Services, Housing Associations and homeowners.
Working with our three recognised chimney sweeping associations, The Association of Professional Independent Chimney Sweeps, The Guild of Master Chimney Sweeps and The National Association of Chimney Sweeps, HETAS is pleased to have launched the first HETAS Approved Chimney Sweeps Directory to further promote to consumers the importance of using a trained and registered chimney sweep.
The Directory also includes some top tips for consumers to make the most of their heating system, from choosing the right fuel through to what to expect on the day a sweep visits their home.
The Directory will be updated regularly as new sweeps sign up and contact details change for existing sweeps. Copies of the HETAS Approved Chimney Sweep Directory are available via the HETAS Shop or by contacting the team on 01684 278170.
To be listed in the Directory chimney sweeps are required to be a member of one of HETAS’ nominated chimney sweeping associations, APICS, Guild or the NACS. The induction, training and assessment procedures of the trade associations represent to HETAS that you are a competent practical sweep with the appropriate equipment and insurance.

Surefire and the National Association of Chimney Sweeps (NACS) are pleased to announce a new partnership to help improve the services for NACS Members and HETAS Installers. Surefire, part of Docherty Group has expanded its catchment area for engineers to be able to attend one of two HETAS Approved Training Centres – one in Stone, Staffordshire, the other in Ripley, Derbyshire. Surefire will provide tutors and assessors for all HETAS training, bringing consistency to both centres. The NACS centre is being upgraded to be able to offer the full suite of HETAS training courses.
The NACS actively promotes all HETAS courses to its Members and in particular the H003 course as a requirement to progress to the status of ‘Master Chimney Sweep’ with NACS, and as a prerequisite to becoming a HETAS Approved Chimney Sweep. NACS now has over two hundred HETAS Approved Sweeps, many of whom are also registered installers. HETAS Training Manager Mike Harvey comments:
“The partnership between the two organisations is great news and will undoubtedly prove successful. The additional training resources combined with experienced trainers with a wealth of industry knowledge will ensure training needs within the area are met. A very pleasing industry development.”

Mr. Dave Donald, NACS Head of Training, will continue to be in charge of all NACS training courses. Surefire Training Services is also an Associate Members of the NACS. The new partnership will commence on 1st July 2016. All HETAS course bookings will be taken by Surefire through a central telephone line and NACS members can continue to ring the NACS office and select HETAS training.
